Power surplus states in India

Which Indian States Are Power Surplus?

  • In northeast India Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Assam are power surplus states.
  • Gujarat and Maharashtra are two of the major states in India in terms of power generation, and hence both have a power surplus.

Do you know? India is the world’s third-largest consumer and producer of electricity. As of October 2022, India has installed power generation capacity totaling 408 GW. India has one of the most diversified power sectors in the world. The country generates its power from coal, gas, hydro, wind, solar, and even domestic waste. Most of the states in India are in power surplus except for a few.

India is a power-surplus country. In 2022, the country achieved this remarkable feat. This won’t be possible without India’s leading power generation companies like NTPC and NHPC and several private companies like Tata Power, Adani Power, and JSW Energy. Here we’ll take a look at power surplus states in India.

Gujarat power surplus

Gujarat

One of the most successful states in India in terms of power generation is Gujarat. The energy requirement of the state is 20,277 MW as of April 2022, while its installed capacity is more than double that at 44,127 MW. The state sells its surplus power to around 10 different states. Almost 100% of the villages in Gujarat have 24-hour power supply infrastructure.

Maharashtra power surplus

Maharashtra

Which is the highest-producing state in India? Maharashtra generates close to 43,500 MW of power. The power demand for Maharashtra stands at close to 30,000 MW. Mumbai’s power demand alone in Maharashtra stands at around 4,000 MW.

Odisha power surplus

Odisha

In the eastern region, Odisha is one of the major power surplus states in India. Back in the 1990s, the state’s power sector was in deficit. In 2020, the state became power surplus due to the increased adoption of green energy. The average annual power demand of the state stands at close to 3,500 MW, while its installed capacity stands at around 4,300 MW.

Tripura power surplus

Tripura

Way back in 2023–2014, Tripura became the first state in the northeast to become a power surplus. It happened when Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) installed a 726 MW thermal power plant 64 km south of the state’s capital, Agartala. Tripura has close to 750 MW of installed power generation, while its peak power demand stands at 250 MW.

Arunachal pradesh power surplus

Arunachal Pradesh

After Tripura, the second northeastern state in India to become a power surplus is Arunachal Pradesh. In November 2022, PM Narendra Modi dedicated a 600 MW Kameng Hydro Power Plant in its capital, Itanagar. With this power plant developed at 8,450 crore, Arunachal Pradesh became power surplus. The state has installed power generation capacity of 711 MW, while its peak power demand stands at around 200 MW.

Sikkim power surplus

Sikkim

Another power-surplus state in northeastern India is Sikkim. The state has installed power generation capacity of around 750 MW. Its peak power demand stands at close to 120 MW. The state has 19 hydroelectric power stations. In 2006, Sikkim achieved 100% rural electrification.

Mizoram power surplus

Mizoram

The third power-surplus state in northeastern India is Mizoram. In 2017, after Sikkim and Tripura, Mizoram achieved this feat. The state has a 60-MW Tuirial hydropower project, which meets the energy requirements of Mizoram. The peak power demand of Mizoram stands at around 160 MW, while its installed power generation capacity is around 230 MW.

Assam power surplus

Assam

The largest state in northeastern India is Assam. In 2020, this state became a power surplus. The peak power demand of Assam stands at around 1,800 MW, while its installed power generation capacity is close to 2,000 MW.

Himachal pradesh power surplus

Himachal Pradesh

After Assam, Himachal Pradesh is also one of the power-surplus states in India. The total power generation capacity of Himachal Pradesh stands at around 11,200 MW. Hydropower is the major source of power generation in Himachal, which has a potential to generate more than 24,000 MW of power. The peak power demand for the state stands at 2200 MW to 2500 MW.

Karnataka power surplus

Karnataka

One of the leading states in India in renewable energy is Karnataka. The state has totaled 15,463 MW of installed green power generation capacity as of November 2022, while overall capacity stands at 31,000 MW. Karnataka’s nearly 50% power demand comes from renewable energy, which is the highest among all states.

Madhya pradesh power surplus

Madhya Pradesh

The latest Indian state to become power surplus is Madhya Pradesh. As of January 2023, Madhya Pradesh’s total power generation capacity stands at 22,730 MW. On December 30, 2022, the maximum power demand of the state was 17,065 MW. Madhya Pradesh is also one of the leading states in the transition to renewable energy.

Telangana power surplus

Telangana

Formed in 2014, Telangana is also a power surplus state in India. The total power generation capacity of the state stands at 17,305 MW as of May 2022, while its peak power demand stands at close to 14,000 MW. The state has created an infrastructure for a peak power demand of 17,000 MW, which is excellent.

Chhattisgarh power surplus

Chattisgarh

After Telangana, another power-surplus state in India is Chhattisgarh. The installed power generation capacity of Chhattisgarh stands at around 20,000 MW, while its peak power demand is close to 5,000 MW. Due to its vast coal resources, the Korba in Chhattisgarh is famous for its nickname, “the power capital of the country.” The NTPC Korba power plant is one of the largest in India, with 2,600 MW capacity.

Haryana power surplus

Haryana

One of the most industrialised states in India is Haryana. This state too is in power surplus, with a total installed power generation capacity of around 13,000 MW. The peak power demand of the state stands at close to 7,000 MW to 8,000 MW.
