Dating back to 280 BCE during the Mauryan Empire it was Ashoka the great who gave India the Lion Capital. It is the National Emblem of India since 26 January 1950. The sculpture of four Asiatic lions standing back to back, symbolises power, courage, pride, and confidence. The original Lion Capital is a prominent Buddhist symbol and is now preserved at the Sarnath Museum in Uttar Pradesh, India.
