Daily ridership of this metro is around 2.5 million on an average. Close to 2 billion passengers use Delhi Metro annually which is more than India’s population.

Delhi Metro covers 255 stations and has 336 trains. Total system length of Delhi Metro is 348.12 km. It operates on 9 lines in which 3 and 4 are Blue lines. Other lines are Red Line, Yellow Line, Green Line, Violet Line, Airport Express Line, Pink Line, Magenta Line and Grey Line. 20 years ago on 24 December 2002 Delhi Metro began operation.

Kolkata Metro – Oldest Metro In India

Way back in October 1984 it was Kolkata which got the first metro in India. Being oldest the Kolkata Metro is also the India’s 2nd busiest metro. It records a daily ridership of over 7 lakh passengers. The planning of Kolkata Metro was started even before India’s Independence in 1920s.

Kolkata Metro operates on Blue Line, Purple Line and Green Line. Yellow Line and Orange Line are under construction while Pink Line is planned. It has a system length of 46.96 km and 45 metro units does 300 trips on it on daily basis. On 12 April 2023 Kolkata Metro created history with successful trial run under river Hooghly and became India’s first operated metro under the river.

Namma Metro – 2nd Longest Metro In India

India’s 2nd busiest metro is Namma Metro aka Bengaluru Metro. After Delhi Metro it is India’s 2nd longest metro with a system length of 69.9 km. Daily ridership of Namma Metro is close to 550,000 lakh which makes it one of the busiest metros in India. It operates on 64 stations out of which 55 are elevated and 8 are underground.

On 20 October 2011 Namma Metro began its operations. At present it operates on two lines Purple Line and Green Line. Other three lines (Yellow, Pink and Blue) are under construction. It is jointly funded by Government of India and Government of Karnataka.

Mumbai Metro – India’s Only 100% Elevated Metro

The financial capital of India i.e Mumbai got its first metro in 2014. However important parts of city got connected with inauguration of Line 2A and Line 7 by PM Narendra Modi on 19 January 2023. The importance of these two lines were such that within a month of inauguration it recorded a ridership of 44.26 lakh.

At present Mumbai Metro operates on Line 2A, Line 7 and Line 1 with daily ridership of 550,000 on an average. Many lines of this Metro are still under construction which will make city movement a lot easier and affordable in future. Mumbai Metro has tendency to become on par with Delhi Metro in operations. At present it has 43 stations and system length of 46.4 km.

Hyderabad Metro – 3rd Longest Metro In India

The 5th and last metro in the list is Hyderabad Metro. It is the third longest metro in India which records a daily ridership of 4.5 lakh passengers on an average. It is funded by Public-Private-Partnsrship (PPP) model. India’s leading construction company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) holds 90% stake in Hyderabad Metro while 10% belongs to Telangana Government.

Hyderabad Metro has a system length of 67.21 km and it operates on 3 lines – Red Line, Blue Line and Green Line. In November 2017 it began its operations with 57 stations at present. In 2017 it was inaugurated by prime minister Narendra Modi himself.
