Pratibha Patil

India’s First Woman President

Smt. Pratibha Patil is the first woman president of India. Born of 19 December 1934, Pratibha Devisingh Patil served as the 12th president of India from 2007-2012. She is from Indian National Congress (INC) party and before becoming the president she was the governor of Rajasthan. Narayan Rao Patil is her father name. Pratibha Patil husband name is Devisingh Ramsingh Shekhawat. She got married to him in 1965 and has one daughter and son. In first female of India list Pratibha Patil is an important name after Indira Gandhi.

Indira Gandhi

India’s First Woman Prime Minister

Daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi was the first woman prime minister of India. Her full name was Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi and she served as India’s prime minister from January 1966 to October 1984. To date, Indira Gandhi is India’s only woman prime minister. Indira Gandhi was from Indian National Congress party and in 1959 she was elected as party’s president. In creation of Bangladesh, Indira Gandhi played an important role. From 1975 to 1977, Indira Gandhi declared emergency in India. Then in 1984 she carried out Operation Bluestar which led her assassination by her own bodyguards.

Sarojini Naidu

India’s First Woman Governor

Sarojini Naidu was the India’s first woman governor who got a nickname ‘the Nightingale of India’ or ‘Bharat Kokila’ by Mahatma Gandhi. She was the governor of present day Uttar Pradesh (UP). Sarojini Naidu was born in Bengali Family in Hyderabad and was part of India’s Independence movement from Britishers. In 1925, she became the president of Indian National Congress (INC). The Golden Threshold and In the Bazaars of Hyderabad are notable works of Sarojini Naidu. On 2 March 1949, Sarojini Naidu died of cardiac arrest. Razia Sultan

India’s First Woman Ruler

In India’s medieval history Razia Sultan was the first and only muslim female who ever ruled India. She succeed her father Iltutmish but was not acceptable to the nobles. In 1240 AD, she became the victim of a conspiracy and was assassinated. The place of assassination was Kaithal (Haryana).

Kiran Bedi

India’s First Woman IPS Officer

Born of 9 June 1949, Kiran Bedi is the first woman IPS officer of India. She remained in IPS service for 35 years from 1972 then took retirement in 2007. In 1966, she was crowned the national junior tennis champion. At age of 9 she started playing tennis. After her retirement from public service Kiran Bedi joined Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) in 2015.

Fathima Beevi is the first woman judge of the supreme court. She was appointed to the apex court in 1989 and was also the first muslim woman to hold a position in the higher judiciary of India. After her retirement she became a member of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and then Governor of Tamil Nadu from 1997 to 2001.

Neeraja Bhanot

First Woman To Get Ashok Chakra

A successful model and flight attendant, Neeraja Bhanot was India’s first woman to get Ashok Chakra. Government of India gave her India’s highest peacetime gallantry award in 1987. She was the youngest recipient of Ashok Chakra. A Pan Am Flight 73 was hijacked by a terrorist organization and she died of gunshot wound while saving passengers on 5 September 1986 in that flight. M.S. Subbulakshmi was the first ever woman to get Bharat Ratna. She was an Indian Carnatic singer from Tamil Nadu. She is also the first Indian musician to get Ramon Magsaysay award in 1974. In United Nations General Assembly she performed her dance in 1966 and became first Indian woman to do so. Government of India gave her Padma Bhusan in 1954, Padma Vibushan in 1975 and finally Bharat Ratna in 1998. On 11 December 2004 she died in Chennai, Tamil Nadu at age of 88.

Kalpana Chawla

First Indian Woman To Go Into Space

Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of Indian origin to go in space. She was a mechanical engineer born in Haryana. Space Shuttle Columbia was her first flight into space which took off in 1997. In February 2003 the final flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia crashed, killing all 7 people on board including Kalpana Chawla. Jean-Pierre Harrison was her husband with whom Kalpana Chawla got married in 1983 at age of 21.
