Pallonji Shapoorji Mistry (Died – 28 June 2022)

One of the richest men in India and Europe was the Pallonji Shapoorji Mistry. He died on 28 June 2022 at the age of 93 in Mumbai and was the oldest billionaire in India. Shapoorji Pallonji Group was headed by him and saw a major expansion under his visionary leadership. This group is more than 150 years old and in Tata Sons it holds 18.4% stakes which is largest for an individual. His net worth was almost $29 billion.

In 2016, Government of India gave him Padma Bhusan for his immense contribution to Indian industry. During India’s Independence he joined his family biz the Shapoorji Pallonji Group at the age of 18. When his father died in 1975 he took over the entire business. He had a powerful presence in the Tata Group and in his term the Shapoorji Pallonji Group acquired stakes in many other companies like Afcons Infrastructure, Sterling & Wilson, Forbes Gokak etc.

Cyrus Mistry (Died – 4 September 2022)

After Pallonji Shapoorji Mistry death, the Shapoorji Pallonji Group suffered another personal loss in 2022. Barely after two months one of his two sons Cyrus Mistry too died. The death of Cyrus Mistry was a big setback for the Shapoorji Pallonji Group as he was supposed to lead the conglomerate after his father death. On 4 September 2022, Cyrus Mistry died in a car accident at the age of 54 in Palghar, Maharashtra.

Cyrus Mistry was the sixth chairman of the Tata Group from 2012 to 2016. He was only the 2nd person with no Tata surname as a chairman of one of the India’s largest conglomerate. He used to hold Irish citizenship and was born on 4 July 1968 in Bombay, Maharashtra. Dispute between Ratan Tata and Cyrus Mistry is very famous in India’s corporate sector. Ratan Tata considered him as a threat to his legacy and so in 2016 he was removed as a chairman.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala (Died – 14 August 2022)

One of the most successful investor and trader in India was Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. He died on 14 August 2022 due to kidney related problems and multiple organ failure. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was an ace investor who started his investment journey with ₹5,000. At the time of his death his net worth was close to $6 billion. During his last days Rakesh Jhunjhunwala founded the Akasa Airlines. He was so successful in trading and investing that he got a name of “India’s Warren Buffett” and “Big Bull Of India”.

This group has a market cap of more than $110 billion and comprises around 40 companies under it. In 1965, Rahul Bajaj took over the Bajaj Group and expanded it like no other. In five decades of his leadership the Bajaj Auto revenue grew from just ₹7.5 crore to ₹12,000 crore annually. The Bajaj Chetak was the main growth driver of the Bajaj Auto.

On 12 February 2022, Rahul Bajaj died of pneumonia at the age of 83. Prior to his death Rahul Bajaj also had heart and cancer problems. His net worth was more than $2.5 billion. Died on 1 October 2022, Tulsi Tanti was the founder of Suzlon. He was one of the first businessmen in India who saw an opportunity in renewables. So in 1995 he started Suzlon which is a turbine manufacturer and the world’s 5th largest wind turbine supplier. This got him a nickname “The Wind Man Of India”. In 2006 his net worth was over $15 billion as Suzlon was the largest wind power company in the world at that time. On 1 October 2022, Tulsi Tanti suffered a cardiac arrest that led to his death. He was an engineer by profession and before Suzlon he used to run a textile company.
