Maruti Suzuki Plant, Manesar, Haryana

Maruti Suzuki Manesar Plant, Haryana

India’s largest car manufacturing plant is operated by Maruti Suzuki. This plant is capable to produce 880,000 cars every year. Spread over 600 acres the Manesar plant houses three manufacturing units A, B and C. To keep up with huge power demand this plant has its own engine plant and suppliers mark. Maruti Suzuki produces over 20 models in more than 1200 variants in the Manesar Plant.

Over 3100 cars leave this plant daily backed by over 7000 employees who operates this plant at nearly 100% capacity. More than 3400 trucks of 2500 vendors enter in this 600 acre plant to supply auto components on daily basis. In every six months the Manesar plant undergoes one week of maintenance and during this time it doesn’t produce any cars. On 8 February 2007 the Manesar plant started production.

Maruti Suzuki operates another plant in Gurugram, Haryana which is capable of producing 700,000 cars annually. This plant rolls out over 2700 cars on daily basis. Collectively Manesar and Gurugram plant in Haryana produces 5800 cars every day. In Gujarat, Suzuki separately operates a car manufacturing plant capable of producing 250,000 cars every year.

India’s 2nd largest car manufacturing plant is of Renault-Nissan joint venture company. This plant is in Chennai and can produce 480,000 cars annually. As the plant is equally owned by Renault & Nissan so the areas are divided equally for both companies. In just 40 months of production this plant achieved a production milestone of 500,000 vehicles.

The Renault-Nissan plant started its production in 2010. In 2010, Renault and Nissan initially invested ₹4500 crore to setup this plant. At that time it was a huge investment for the state which grew with construction of many other automobile manufacturing units. With an area of over 650 acres this is one of the largest car manufacturing plants in India.

Hyundai India Plant, Chennai

After Renault & Nissan, Hyundai too invested heavily in Chennai for its car manufacturing plant at Irungattukottai and Sriperumbudur near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. This plant has a capacity of producing 680,000 lakh cars annually. Hyundai India manufactures over 11 models in this plant. Hyundai initially invested $1.5 billion in construction of its Chennai plant which grew up to $2.7 billion with time.

This plant has an area of 535 acres and two plants inside it separately produces 330,000 and 335,000 cars annually. Total 9,500 employees work here and Hyundai India is the largest investor in Tamil Nadu. It is an integrated plant which has every facility related to car production. This includes paint, body shop etc.

Tata Motors Plant, Sanand, Gujarat

India’s 4th largest car manufacturing plant is of Tata Motors in Sanand, Gujarat. This plant has an area of massive 1100 acres which makes it the largest car manufacturing plant in India. Tata Motors bought Ford Sanand plant too after the company’s exit from the Indian market. The Ford Sanand plant is spread across 350 acres which will further increase the area of the plant.

The newly acquired Ford plant has a capacity of producing 420,000 vehicles and Tata Motors Sanand plant itself has a capacity of producing 3 lakh vehicles annually. Both plants will employ around 7,600 people. Tata Motors invested ₹2000 crore for its Sanand plant and then ₹725 crore to buy the Ford Sanand plant. Tata Motors also operates its plants in Pimpri and Ranjangaon in Pune, Maharashtra.

One of the leading automakers in India, Kia has its car manufacturing plant in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. This plant is spread across 536 acres and required $2 billion for the construction. With a capacity of producing 300,000 lakh vehicles annually the Kia plant operates at its full capacity. In less than three years of operation, Kia’s Anantapur plant produced more than 500,000 lakh vehicles. Kia operates 3 shifts in the plant to keep up with the demand of its vehicles.

India’s 6th largest car manufacturing plant is of Mahindra at Chakan, Maharashtra. In 2010 this plant went operational and holds a production capacity of 3 lakh cars annually. This plant is spread across 700 acres and Mahindra invested $1 billion to construct it. Apart from making cars this plant is also used for manufacturing commercial vehicles. In 2019, this plant rolled out its 1 millionth vehicle. Mahindra operates many manufacturing plants in India and Chakan plant is the largest.
