NIT Rourkela – Largest NIT Campus In India (Area – 1200 Acres)

Which is the largest NIT campus in India? It is NIT Rourkela which is spread across 1,200 acres. It was established in 1961 on 15 August. It is one of the most reputed institutes in Odisha for which then CM Biju Patnaik himself gave a 648 acres land. A library named after Biju Patnaik is in the NIT Rourkela campus which holds more than 65,000 books.

NIT Rourkela has around 5,700 students. As we talked about REC institutes above, the NIT Rourkela was established as REC institute. Government of India granted autonomy status to this institute in 2002. Its foundation stone was led by then PM Jawaharlal Nehru himself. The campus of NIT Trichy is spread across 800 acres. P.S. Manisundaram was the founder of NIT Trichy. The chairman of Tata Sons – Natarajan Chandrasekaran earned his degree from NIT Trichy. NIT Bhopal (Area – 650 Acres)

The 3rd largest NIT campus in India is of the NIT Bhopal. It is named after Maulana Azad who was the first education minister of India. So another name of this institute is Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology Bhopal. It was established in 1960 and has close to 5000 students. Its campus is spread across 650 acres. First batch of the NIT Bhopal started with 120 students and 7 teachers.

It was among the first 8 Regional Engineering College (REC) established in India. In 1961, Jawaharlal Nehru himself laid the foundation stone of NIT Bhopal. In 1987, Tripura University came up and so NIT Agartala switched its affiliation to the Tripura university.
