Chenab Rail Bridge, J&K

Situated In J&K, the Chenab Rail Bridge is an engineering marvel which is the world’s highest rail bridge. The Chenab Rail Bridge spans at a height of 1,178 ft (359 m) which is more than the height of Eiffel Tower. Unlike any other bridges in India the Chenab Rail Bridge is constructed on an arc made of steel and concrete. Afcons Infrastructure is behind the construction of this bridge with the help of IISC Bangalore. DRDO too was involved in the design of the bridge. Total length of the Chenab Rail Bridge is 1,315 (1.3 km).

Bogibeel Bridge, Assam

India’s largest rail-road bridge is Bogibeel Bridge which measures 4.94 km on Brahmaputra river. This bridge is situated in Assam. It is Asia’s 2nd largest rail-road bridge too which is designed to be serviceable for 120 years and withstand earthquake of magnitude upto 7 on richter scale. Three lane road goes from the upper deck of the bridge and double rail line goes on the lower deck. The Bogibeel Bridge was inaugurated in 2018 on the occasion of Good Governance Day. Construction of this bridge was carried out by the Hindustan Construction Company.

Bhupen Hazarika Bridge , Assam

After Bogibeel bridge there’s another major bridge in Assam known as Bhupen Hazarika bridge. This bridge is the longest bride in India which has a length of 9.15 km. Situated on Lohit river the Bhupen Hazarika bridge connects Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. This bridge is also known as Dhola Sadiya bridge as it connects two villages Dhola and Sadiya. Between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh the Bhupen Hazarika bridge is the first permanent road connection which was, built at a cost of ₹1,000 crore.

Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Mumbai

An engineering marvel with a length of 5.6 km in Mumbai is the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. This bridge has 8 lanes and it is the 4th longest bride in India. It was the first infrastructure project in Mumbai to use seismic arresters. Like Bogibeel bridge, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link too can withstand earthquake of magnitude upto 7 on richter scale. Hindustan Construction Company started the construction of this bridge in the year 2000 and total cost of this project was ₹1,600 crore.

Atal Bridge, Gujarat

In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, the Atal Bridge is a major tourist attraction which is a kite-themed bridge. This bridge connects east and west side of sabarmati river front. This bridge is mainly developed for walking and seating arrangements for the people are also there. The Atal Bridge has a length of 300 m and it is 13 to 14 m wide. 2,100 tonnes of metal were used in the construction of this bridge.

Atal Setu, J&K

In Jammu & Kashmir a cable-stayed bridge known as Atal Setu measures 592 metres. It is one of the major bridges in that area which connects J&K to Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. IIT New Delhi approved the design of Atal Setu and in 2015 the bride was inaugurated. Atal Setu is situated on Ravi river and it is named after former prime minister Atal Vihari Vajpayee. Interesting thing to note here is that the bridge was inaugurated a day before Atal Vihari Vajpayee birthday on 24 December, 2015.

Vidyasagar Setu, West Bengal

Which is the first cable-stayed bridge in India? It is Vidyasagar Setu that links Kolkata and Howrah. Construction of this bridge was started way back in 1979 and was inaugurated in 1992. After Howrah Bride the Vidyasagar Setu is the second bridge built on Hooghly river. Total length of the Vidyasagar Setu is 823 metres. It is one of the busiest bridges in West Bengal which handles more than 61,000 vehicles every day.

Pamban Bridge, Tamil Nadu

India’s first sea bridge is Pamban bridge which is operational since 1914. This bridge connects Pamban Island to Rameswaram and it was the only surface transport between two places. In 1988 Government of India constructed a parallel road bridge known as Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge which took 14 years in completion and is 2.3 km long. The Pamban bridge is located in the most challenging environments and it is prone to cyclones and high wind velocity.

Mahatma Gandhi Setu, Bihar

One of the longest bridges in India is the Mahatma Gandhi Setu in Bihar. It is the third longest river bridge in India measuring 5.75 km in length. To connect Patna and Hajipur, then prime minister Indira Gandhi inaugurated the Mahatma Gandhi Setu in 1982. Gammon India constructed the Mahatma Gandhi Setu at an initial cost of around ₹88 crore. It handles more than 85,000 vehicles every single day. A two lane road passes through the Mahatma Gandhi Setu.

Vembanad Rail Bridge, Kerala

The 2nd longest bridge of Indian Railway is Vembanad bridge located in Kerala. This bridge has a total length of 4.6 km and Government of India enterprise Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd constricted it. India’s leading construction company Afcons Infrastructure constructed this bridge. Vembanad bridge crosses the Vembanad lake which is a famous tourist attraction in Kerala. Container railways is an usual sighting on the Vembanad bridge as it is dedicated to shipment only. Edappally and Vallarpadam are the two places which the Vembanad bridge connects.
